Executive Summary

Talisen provides a solution that reduces energy costs and shrinks the carbon footprint across three school districts in St. Louis County. Talisen’s Enterprise Sustainability Platform (ESP) helps analyze and reduce energy use in school buildings – cutting costs and lowering consumption at over 70 sites. The ESP also identifies low-cost operational and maintenance improvements in the existing buildings.
Talisen partnered with the Cooperating School Districts (CSD) to coordinate the project, while St. Louis County (grantee) and Ameren Missouri (utility) channeled funding and resources to the project. Initial funding was provided by an Energize Missouri Communities grant from the Missouri Department of Natural Resources and an Ameren Missouri Retro Commissioning (RCx) Incentive program. Talisen subcontracted with mechanical contractor Murphy Company to carry out the retro commissioning process.

Project Overview

The first phase of the project was installing the hardware and software for collecting data from various sources. This data provides a baseline to work from. Once this baseline data is being collected, buildings that are similar are brought on-line. The data collected among similar buildings helps stakeholders understand why, for example, a gymnasium in one location is more expensive to heat or cool than another location. During this phase, Talisen also recommended energy saving measures and estimated the costs savings if the measures are implemented and maintained properly.
The second phase involved verifying energy consumption data after implementation of the energy saving measures. With ESP, the schools will be able to perform the verification online using real-Ɵ me data. The last phase is where the schools can show the savings and devise a sustainable plan for maintaining savings and developing strategies for deeper energy savings.

  • Retro-Commissioned 6 of the largest electric consuming schools for a total reduction estimated at 5.29 million kilowatt -hours
  • Developed over $2,000,000 in capital improvements through matching and retro commissioning funds
  • Project recognized by National Association of Counties, St. Louis Business Journal and USGBC Green Schools Conference 2011
